I am using an AquaClear 70 on my 20 gallon reef tank. I bought this item because the intake tube did nothing to address the surface scum that always seemed to build up over time. The final straw was waking up to find my horseshoe crap stuck to the intake and struggling. Fish should be strong enough to avoid the draw of the filter, but horseshoe crabs, with their giant carapace and tiny legs are not strong swimmers. With the surface skimmer, I no longer have to worry about this happening. The magnetic mounting system is also quite awesome. I would highly recommend!
First off, you really need an ATO (auto top off) to run this, or any overflow based filter for that matter. This one in particular because the overflow box is relatively small.
I tried to use this with only the upper section of the intake tube for the AC70 (the u-shaped tube) and it pulled too much air because it wasn’t deep enough in the overflow box. I took the extension tube and cut it so it was about 1” above the bottom of the overflow box and now I can run the filter on the highest GPH.
It’s a little tricky getting the ATO sensor in the box with the filter tube and at the right height, but once you do it works really well. Once the ATO sensor is adjusted you won’t get any more air bubbles or gurgling. It’s pretty much silent. Setup was easy thanks to the magnetic mounts, I really like this as a surface skimming solution for my cheapo Aqueon 29g.
You really need an ATO for this to work.
Received this item and had issues from the get go. Causing the filter to sputter causing micro bubbles to flood the tank. Needless to say coral were not happy. Had to adjust the flow of the filter to all the way on its lowest setting for this to work properly. And in the middle of the night it started sputtering again and again flooding the tank with micro bubbles. It was the middle of the night so I messed with the filter flow again till it stopped but according to the manufacture this item does best with a ato system to keep the water level the same all the time.
Great product! Easy setup and install. I used it to add surface skimming to my quarantine/acclimation tank.
