Recent geopolitical and trade policy developments are creating significant disruptions across multiple industries—including aquarium gear and custom fabrication products. The return of Trump-era tariffs, coupled with China’s restriction on rare earth metal exports (especially magnets), is triggering a wave of uncertainty in global supply chains.
As a result, many of the raw materials and components we use—such as rare earth magnets, cast acrylics, 3D printer filaments, and specialized hardware—are facing rising costs or supply delays. These issues will inevitably affect pricing on some Oceanbox Designs products.
Trump Tariffs & China's Rare Earth Export Controls
The U.S. includes tariffs on key Chinese imports on April 10, 2025 that could face up to 145% in import duties, including:
- Rare earth elements (like neodymium used in magnets)
- Precision hardware
- Acrylic sheets and plastics
China, in turn, has responded by restricting exports of rare earth metals on April 13th, which are essential for producing strong magnets, electronics, and many advanced components.
Magnet Shortage: Up to 145% Cost Spike Predicted
Rare earth magnets (especially neodymium) are critical in many of our magnetic products. Experts forecast:
- 80–145% price increase on rare earth magnets starting June 2025
- Prolonged shortages due to export restrictions and rising global demand
Oceanbox Designs is already seeing early signs of price increases from suppliers and reduced stock availability.
Wider Impact: Acrylic, 3D Filament & Hardware
Beyond magnets, other imported raw materials like cast acrylic sheets, 3D printer filaments, and custom screws and fittings are also impacted.
- Tariffs of up to 145% on acrylics, 3D printer filaments, fasteners, etc.
- Shipping delays due to import/export restrictions of raw materials.
- Limited access to bulk hardware components.
These factors increase the cost of manufacturing across our entire product line.
